Generally, tea is considered to be a healthy alternative to the harmful coffee, which contains mostly caffeine.
The Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system boosting mood and improving focus in small dose. However, excessive consumption of caffeine can lead to negative effects.
- Insomnia: Caffeine disrupts sleep, so avoid it close to bedtime.
- Heart Effects: Raises heart rate and blood pressure temporarily; caution for those with heart conditions.
- Anxiety: High doses can cause jitteriness and nervousness.
- Digestive Issues: May lead to stomach upset and acid reflux.
- Bone Health: Excessive intake might interfere with calcium absorption, impacting bone health.
- Pregnancy: Advised for pregnant women to limit caffeine due to potential risks.
There are several types of tea and coffee. But, in general the composition is nearly related. The table below shows a general comparison of the black tea and coffee.
| Features | Black Tea | Black Coffee |
| Energy Boost | Moderate | High |
| Caffeine | Lower | Higher |
| Taste | Smooth, floral, slightly bitter | Bold, bitter, slightly acidic |
| Acidity | Moderate | High |
| Antioxidants | Lots of flavonoids & phenolic acids | Plenty of chlorogenic acid |
| Tannins | Present (contribute to astringency) | None |
The coffee is only related to the acidity. However, we tested the acidity of the tea and coffee and we found that tea, even green tea is acidic, in contrast to many considering it to be alkaline.
We prepared a Cup of:
- Black Coffee: Nescafe Classic
- Black Coffee: Nescafe GOLD
- Green Tea: Rakura Organic Green Tea
- Black Tea: Tokla GOLD
The making procedure was simple
- Equal quantity of heated water just before boiling was poured in four glasses.
- The Nescafe classic, Nescafe gold, Green Tea & Black Tea each exactly weighted 5 grams.
- The soluble coffee was directly dissolved in the hot water.
- The green tea and black tea was left for 5 minutes to be soaked and then strained.
- The Ph was measured with calibrated Ph meter Ketotek.

The Ph scale is a scale from 0 to 14, which measures the degree of acidity or alkalinity. Lower than 7 means acidic and higher than 7 means alkaline. One point increase or decrease means 10 times more value. For example: Ph of 5 means 100 times more acidic than Ph of 7.
| Rank | Beverage | pH | Approx. Times More Acidic (Compared to Green Tea) |
| 1 | Nescafe Classic | 4.84 | 25 times more acidic |
| 2 | Nescafe Gold | 4.96 | 18 times more acidic |
| 3 | Black Tea | 5.38 | 5 times more acidic |
| 4 | Green Tea | 6.20 | N/A (baseline) |
This shows that all the four tested tea and coffee were acidic in nature. The Nescafe Classis which contains Robusta coffee is found to be most acidic, around 25 times more acidic than green tea. The Nescafe Gold which contains Arabica coffee is lesser acidic than the classic version. However, Nescafe gold is also 18 times more acidic than green tea. The green tea is also found to be acidic due Polyphenols, catechins and tannins present in it.
However, the nearly neutral pH of green tea with all the antioxidants properties make it a healthy alternative to other forms of tea and coffee. It has several properties like:
- Antioxidant Rich: Abundant in polyphenols, especially EGCG, green tea has potent antioxidant properties.
- Heart Health: Regular consumption may be linked to reduced cardiovascular risk, contributing to improved cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure.
- Weight Management: Caffeine and catechins in green tea may support metabolism and fat oxidation, aiding in weight management.
- Brain Health: Contains caffeine and L-theanine, potentially benefiting cognitive function and mood, lowering the risk of cognitive decline.
- Cancer Prevention: While more research is needed, some studies suggest green tea’s antioxidants may have cancer-protective effects.
- Digestive Health: The moderate acidity of green tea may offer mild digestive benefits.
