What is a Tube Settler?
Tube settler is a high-rate sedimentation tank that comprises of several tubes or plates together which works as mini sedimentation tanks to decrease the detention time.
It is a technology that achieves a detention time of less than 15 minutes, while a conventional plain sedimentation tank has a much higher detention time of 1-2 hours.
They can be made of a variety of shapes and sizes that can be circular, square, hexagonal, or plate type. Modular self-fitting pieces have also been used nowadays for easy assembly and removal.

Advantages of Tube Settler
- Faster detention time (less than 15 minutes)
- High-cost savings (due to smaller sizes plants)
- Used in water treatment (discrete and flocculent settling) and wastewater treatment.
- High efficiency in turbidity removal (up to 90% )
- Modification of existing sedimentation tank with tube settler to better perform/ increase capacity
- Available in prefabricated modular setups
History of Tube Settler
- The idea originated by Hazen in 1904
- Camp explored it in 1946
- Hansen and Culp designed it using tubes in 1967
- Hernandez and Wright (1970), Yao (1973), Willis (1978), and Fadel (1985) proposed different models for design
- Several studies are ongoing to improve the design and efficiency of tube settlers

Design of Tube Settler
The commonly used design for tube settler is the design given by Yao (1973) and the design sheet is based on it for discrete settling (Type I). The tube settler works well for plain sedimentation as well as for sedimentation with coagulation.
